Styles of Yoga: Part 2

There are so many styles of yoga that finding a class should be easy once you can identify the specific goals of each individual yoga practice. Be aware that all poses in yoga are the same as breathing is important in all but each one has its own special attributes. Here we will look at bikram/hot yoga, anusara, jivamukti, forrest, integral and sivananda.

Bikram yoga got its name from Bikram Choudhury. This form of yoga is sometimes also referred to as "hot yoga' because it is practiced in a room where the temperature is 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The reason for this is that a hot room makes for a loosening of muscles that are tight and it also encourages a tremendous amount of sweating which is believed to be cleansing to the body. The Bikram form of yoga is comprised of 26 different poses however not all "hot classes" are likely to include all of these poses in tandem.

Anusara yoga is a modern form of yoga that got its start in 1997 and was created by a man named John Friend. Anusara puts a great deal of emphasis on the physical alignment and combines it with the positive philosophical aspects that come from Tantra. A belief in the intrinsic goodness of all people is emphasized in anusara yoga. The poses of anusara seek to open up the heart and mind in a way that reaches both the physical and the mental. Anusara is a light hearted and relaxed form of yoga that caters to students who are all levels of experience in the practice of yoga.

Jivamukti yoga was developed from one of the most well-known and influential yoga studios in New York City. The founders of jivamukti were Sharon Gannon and David Life who drew their inspiration from ashtanga yoga and put the emphasis of the practice on meditation, chanting and teachings of a spiritual nature. This form of yoga is physically intense and very often includes chanting. Jivamukti is a kind of yoga that is most commonly practiced in the United States.

Forrest yoga is a form of yoga that came from Santa Monica, California and is taught by a woman named Ana Forrest. Forrest yoga is vigorous in nature and its purpose is to both purify as well as strengthen the body to the best of its ability. Pain, discomfort and emotions that are pent-up in the body are released through forrest yoga and in this way healing is able to start. Forrest yoga is very physically demanding and pays a great deal of attention to deep breathing and strengthening of the abdominal area.

Integral yoga first arrived in the United States in the 1960s. It is based on the teachings of Sri Swami Scahidananda. Integral yoga is a gentler, calm form of yoga and included in the yoga classes are breathing exercises, meditation, chanting and kriyas.

Sivananda yoga was founded in 1957 by a disciple of Swami Sivananda named Swami Vishnu-devananda. This is the same year he started the very first Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center. There are now 80 of these centers across the globe. This form of yoga is based on five particular principles, which include proper exercise (which concentrates on 12 specific poses), proper breathing (which in yoga is pranayama), proper relaxation (savasana), proper diet (which is vegetarian) and positive thinking and meditation (or dhyana).
