The Natural Way To Reduce Your High Blood Pressure

In most medical circles, optimum blood pressure is considered to be 120/80 mm Hg. The top number is "systolic" or the pressure on you arteries as your heart contracts. The bottom number is "diastolic" and is the pressure on your arteries as your heat relaxes. Generally anything over 135/85 is borderline mild hypertensive, and 160/95 or higher is considered an urgent medical problem.

Blood pressure medication is readily prescribed, perhaps thanks in part to pressure from the billion dollar pharmaceutical industry. Seldom is medication actually necessary, however, as blood pressure is easily reduced in most individuals through positive lifestyle changes. Exercise, healthy eating and usually weight loss are normally the most potent weapons in correcting blood pressure. There are also a number of effective natural remedies that will compliment these lifestyle changes and make the battle a little easier.

L-Arginine is an amino acid that promotes the release of NO (nitric oxide) in the body. NO is a vasodilator, it relaxes blood vessels allowing blood to flow more freely and thus lowers blood pressure.

Fish oil- it has long been proven that fish oil has a positive and significant effect on lowering high blood pressure. Fish oil contains DHA (docohexaenoic acid) and it is thought this is the active ingredient that lowers blood pressure.

Niacin- a B vitamin that can reduce atherosclerosis, which is hardening of the arteries due to plaque formation. However, niacin may increase likelihood of side effects when taken in conjunction with blood pressure medication.

Crataegus oxyacantha (Hawthorn)- This is a highly respected natural remedies for reducing high blood pressure. Hawthorn dilates blood vessels by inhibiting a vessel constricting enzyme called ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) thereby allowing blood to flow more freely.

Ginko Biloba- One of the oldest trees on the planet and has been used for centuries for its health giving properties. Modern studies have demonstrated that ginko has a significant effect on the cardiovascular system, relaxing blood vessels, stimulating circulation as well as having anti inflammatory properties.

Dandelion- has a mild diuretic effect, which helps rid the body of excess salt and water, making it easier for the heart to pump. It also contains potassium, a mineral that has proven to be beneficial in reducing blood pressure when in conjunction with a lowered salt intake. This is particularly useful as many diuretics prescribed for high blood pressure (Lasix, Bumex) rid the body of potassium.

If you feel that your high blood pressure medication is causing side effects, them alternative treatment maybe be a better route for you. Remember, if you are on blood pressure medication you must consult with your doctor about any possible interactions with supplements. In most cases natural remedies provide a safe, healthy and effective means of combating hypertension.
