Styles of Yoga: Part 1

Yoga is becoming more and more popular and as it emerges into the mainstream it is capturing the attention of both men and women who wish to improve their mental, physical and spiritual well being. There are a number of different styles of yoga but some are better suited to some people than others. It is important to keep in mind that all of the yoga styles are based on the same kinds of physical poses although the emphasis of each style is not the same. Let's take a look at the styles of hatha, vinyasa, ashtanga (and power yoga), iyengar, and kundalini.

Hatha is the term given to the type of yoga that comes to mind for beginners. It is also an all-encompassing term for a variety of the yoga practices that are physical in nature. Most often when a yoga class is described as being "Hatha-style" this means that it is gentle and very slow paced and thus excellent for those who are just getting started.

Vinyasa is also a more or less general yoga term that encompasses many different kinds of classes. Vinyasa means "breath-synchronized movement" and this is a vigorous and enthusiastic kind of style that is adapted from a series of poses known as "Sun Salutations" that connect movement to breath. A vinyasa yoga class will commence with warm ups that come from the Sun Salutations and the more vigorous, intense type of stretching occur closer to the end of the class when the body is warmed up considerably.

Ashtanga yoga is an intense, vigorous and fast-paced form of yoga. Ashtanga means "eight limbs in Sanskrit" and in this case, there is a particular set of poses that are done but they always must be done in the right order. In ashtanga yoga flow is spoken of because this form of yoga is extremely physically demanding as the body quickly and fluidly moves from one pose to another. Ashtanga provides the inspiration for what is referred to as power yoga. Bear in mind that if a yoga class is called power yoga then it is based on ashtanga principles but it may alter slightly from the strict poses that comprise the practice of ashtanga.

Iyengar yoga got its name from the teachings of a man named yogi B.K.S. Iyengar. This kind of yoga concerns itself with aligning the body properly. In the practice of yoga when alignment is talked about it means the exact position the body must be in to do a particular kind of pose. Appropriate alignment during poses helps to prevent injuries from taking place and also ensures that the person gets the most benefit from the individual poses. The emphasis of iyengar is to hold a position for a considerable length of time as opposed to the flow of swiftly switching from one pose to another. Iyengar often uses props to make it more effective such as blocks, straps and yoga blankets.

Kundalini yoga is concerned with how a person breathes in relation to their physical movement through the poses. Kundalini seeks to free energy that is trapped in the lower part of the body and allow it to move higher up in the body. All types of yoga are concerned with breathing however kundalini looks at the effect of breathing in relation to the specific poses. In yoga breath is referred to as prana, which means energy. Kundalini involves call and response chanting and it makes use of rapid as well as very repetitive types of movements.
