More Information About Garlic

Garlic is good for the body because it strengthen the immune system, lowers cholesterol, helps to prevent heart disease and has its share of anti fungal properties. Many cultures around the world use garlic in one form or another in cooking. Garlic is a bulbous plant that is in the same family as leeks, scallions and onions. Garlic is most often used as a seasoning or an agent for flavoring but it can also be eaten in the same way other vegetables are consumed. Garlic can be purchased as fresh or dried garlic. Dried garlic is the most often used of the two for recipes and it can be found in the form of pink, purple or white varieties, depending on your particular preference. Garlic in its raw form can be pungent and bitter and can stink up the breath whereas when it is roasted or saut‚ed it can take on a mild and sweet aroma.

Garlic is used in many recipes and provides a tasty, savoury flavoring for casseroles, stews, soups, meats, sauces, salad dressings, marinades and vinaigrettes. Garlic is also commonly used to make garlic butter, which can then be spread on bread to make garlic bread or garlic toast. If you do not want to buy fresh garlic for a recipe be aware that a 1/8-teaspoon of garlic powder is roughly the same as a medium fresh clove of fresh garlic.

When selecting garlic at the grocery store be aware that it is not considered a seasonal vegetable and is therefore generally available all year long. When choosing fresh garlic choose bulbs that are firm and plump and make doubly sure that the paper-like skins of the garlic bulbs are intact and are not falling away. Steer clear of garlic bulbs that have bruises, blemishes, nicks, mildew or ones that have soft spots or sprouting. If you cannot find fresh garlic be aware that it can also be purchase as garlic powder, or garlic puree. Some select grocery stores and health food stores might sell garlic juice in a spray form and garlic is sometimes also made into salt as well as granulated garlic.

Always store fresh garlic in an area that is well ventilated and make sure that it is cool, dark and dry. If stored properly, garlic can remain good for a period of four to six months, however it is recommended that once purchased, garlic is used up within a couple of weeks for optimum freshness. If the cloves have been removed from the garlic bulb they can easily be frozen for a number of months and should remain all right to cook with. If garlic has be prepared in any way such as by chopping or mincing then the parts that were not used must be refrigerated but make sure to store the garlic in an airtight container to guard against it stinking up your refrigerator and adjacent food.

There are many different varieties of garlic but the most common include the softneck garlic (which is usually just referred to as garlic as it is the most common type to be found in grocery stores), rocambole, which is a hardneck form of garlic, elephant garlic and green garlic. Garlic is sometimes given the nickname "stinky rose" due to its pungent aroma. A garlic bulb contains on average 10 cloves. One clove of garlic equals approximately one teaspoon of chopped garlic which is equal to 1/2 teaspoon of minced garlic and in turn, 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder.
