Five Healing Herbs
Herbal medicine is fast becoming a natural mainstream healing method in western society. Herbal medicine has been practiced for thousands of years (and continues to be) in places like China, India and across the African continent. The adaptation of herbal medicine in western society has lead to the misconception that one herb is to be taken for a particular ailment. This herb is for a cold, this herb alleviates joint pain. But ancient practice involved combining the power of certain herbs to provide an effective treatment. Treatments can include 40 or more ingredients! Here we are going to discuss herbs that you may have never heard of that could be extremely helpful in your search of healing herbs.Ashwagandha - The jack-of-all-trades in herbal medicine. This is an Indian herb that has an overall restorative effect. It is regularly prescribed to boost the immune system and for wound healing. I am not a fan of animal cruelty, but here is some evidence from a study that was done: Daily shocks were administered to rats and left them with cognitive deficits, high blood level of stress hormone corticosterone, and an ineffective immune system. The rats were then given Ashwagandha and they were restored to normal despite the fact that daily shocks continued to be administered.
Ashwagangahda has also been found to have extremely strong antioxidant properties. This reduces the likelihood of developing cancer and heart disease. Research done in India found that high blood cholesterol levels could be significantly reduced by taking this herb as a supplement.
Gotu Kola - This herb is more commonly know as the Indian Penny Wart. Is known for its positive effect on circulation, and revitalizing nerves and brain cells.
A Gotu Kola cream is used in tropical countries and it helps with wound healing.
Guggul- This has been scientifically proven to reduce cholesterol where it is able to reduce cholesterol by about 12 percent. It contains compounds known as guggulsterones, which help to eliminate cholesterol from the body. Guggul has also been used to treat acne, arthritis and other inflammatory ailments.
Boswellia - Known particularly for its anti-inflammatory effects, this is attributed to the boswellia acids that can be found in the resins the plant produces. This herb is mainly used in Aryuvedic medicine.
Asafoetida - this herb has an extremely pungent odor, traditionally thought to ward away illness. Because of this, it has also been know as Devil's dung, or Stinking gum. This herb is mainly used as a digestive aid and can also have a laxative effect.
Herbal medicines can be extremely effective when used correctly. They are Mother Nature's gift and can be an excellent natural alternative to synthetic medication. It is important that if you are treating a serious illness, such as heart disease, very high blood cholesterol levels, or cancer, you must consult your doctor when using herbs. Herbs can be extremely potent can harm your health. Talking to your doctor can help you understand the effects of some potentially dangerous herbs. Your doctor may also be able to refer you to a trustworthy herbalist in your area.
