Things to Consider When Beginning the Practice of Yoga
Yoga is an excellent form of exercise and it is also a way of integrating the body and mind. Yoga also taps into the spiritual side of a person's being. Making the decision to begin the practice of yoga is a smart idea. Let's take a look at some important points in relation to beginning the practice of yoga.First you need to choose the type of yoga you wish to pursue. There are a number of different varieties of yoga and therefore you should research each one thoroughly before deciding on the method that interest you most. It is recommended for a beginner to try a Hatha or a Vinyasa yoga class because these are both general and basic and simple for a beginner to master.
Next thing you need to do is find a yoga class that is right for you. Check out alternative newspapers in your area or wellness newspapers or magazines to find out where classes are offered and how to register for the class. You could also check the phone book for listings for yoga as well as doing a search on the Internet. Look for a studio or gym that is convenient to your home or work.
When you arrive for your yoga class always wear clothing that is comfortable and can breath easily. If you need particular props for the yoga class such as a mat find this out ahead of time so you do not arrive unprepared.
A typical yoga class will require that students place their mats facing the front of the classroom or front of the gym. The front will be easy to identify, as it will either contain the mat for the teacher or else a small altar and the mats of the students together will form a loose grid. Try not to line your mat up too closely with the person next to you, as everyone needs a certain amount of space to move around in for each pose. As students wait for the teacher to arrive and begin the class many will sit in a cross-legged position and will do their own share of gentle stretching to limber up for the class ahead.
To begin a class a teacher will likely chant the word "om" three times in a row. Some instructors choose to do a short meditation to begin or else will engage in a breathing exercise. Next it is time for the warm up poses, which are followed by more intense, vigorous poses. After these comes the stretches and then to conclude the class, the period of final relaxation. Sometimes when a person requires a rest period during the class they will assume what is known as the "child's pose." Some but not all instructors will circulate about the class and will during the period of final relaxation treat each student to a quick, relaxing massage to round out the class. A great deal of yoga teachers choose to end their classes the way they began them- with a series of "oms" being chanted. Be aware that after your first yoga class you may experience a small degree of soreness but it will go away quickly and each class you will find yourself becoming more limber.
