Aromatherapy and its Effect on Stress

Aromatherapy is an ancient practice that has been around for a long time. In its most basic form, aromatherapy is "the practice of using essential oils and specific scents, such as lavender, lemon and vanilla to improve one's mood and overall level of health as well as to reduce stress in the body and mind." Aromatherapy got its start in Europe but has gradually made its way into the western world and its popularity continues to grow, as it becomes a mainstay of alternative medicine and natural healing.

The sense of smell in every individual is very intense as well as being very well developed. Scents of all types have an effect on the brain that can be good or bad. Scents can conjure up a long forgotten memory, they can make a person feel joyous and happy to be alive and they can also calm, soothe, relax and energize a person. Scents can be an instant pick-me-up! This explains why more and more manufacturers of beauty products such as lotions, body sprays, soaps and the like are incorporating the properties of aromatherapy into their products. Even candle makers are catching onto this trend and sales are soaring because of it.

To give a concrete example, lavender is an herb that used as a tool in aromatherapy has a very calming and soothing effect on a person and it an excellent aid for falling into a restful night's sleep. Back in history the lavender herb was deliberately sewn into pillows so it would encourage the person who laid their head down on it to have a good night's sleep. Lavender is also helpful when it comes to relieving anxiety and nervousness. In days past lavender was sprinkled on handkerchiefs for an individual to breathe in whenever they were feeling overwhelmed by their life circumstances and incredibly anxious. It was known to work extremely well. Lavender is soothing for babies and young children and more and more manufacturers of baby products, such as Johnsons and Johnsons are including this herb in their line of powders, oils and lotions.

It is not really clear whether aromatherapy simply tricks the mind into believing it is being helped or whether it actually does calm the nervous system. Ongoing research in this area is needed to know and understand more about this mysterious phenomenon. Regardless of which is the case, aromatherapy definitely does help to relax a person as well as to reduce levels of stress that have built up in the body.

Aromatherapy can be used to reduce stress if you use it when you are running a bath. Pour a few drops of an essential oil into your bath and then relax ands soak your body in the intoxicating scent. One of the best to try is lavender.

When you are on stress overload and need relief right away, do what they did in days gone by and take a whiff of a soothing scent such as rose, sandalwood or lavender. Your nose will not be the only part of you that thanks you! This small action should provided relief for both your stressed body as well as your stressed mind.

I hope this natural healing article was helpful to you, no matter how much... or how little it had to do with alternative medicine colleges universities.
