A Look at Natural Healing

Natural healing is a form of alternative medicine. Natural health is defined as an "eclectic self-care system of natural therapies concerned with building and restoring health and wellness via prevention and healthy lifestyles." Natural healing takes in many aspects and many disciplines of alternative medicine including diet and exercise, acupuncture, acupressure, relaxation methods (such as yoga and Tai Chi), herbalism, homeopathy, massage therapy, naturopathy, natural hygiene, ayurveda medicine, aromatherapy, Kneipp therapy, nutripathy, sauna and a variety of others.

It was not until the late 20th century that the term natural healing found its way into the western world. However many of the basic beliefs of natural healing first came out of Europe where it got is start. Natural, alternative therapies always were and continue to be, very common in many part of Europe and in fact many of these therapies are encouraged by medical practitioners and are covered, or partially covered, by health insurance plans.

Up until the 1750s most health care was by way of self-care and natural health practitioners or natural healers had a minimum of education in the medical field. While the Revolutionary War was going on between the years of 1775 and 1783 medical concerns were taken care of by lay practitioners and all health conditions from delivering babies to diseases to injuries came by way of folk medicine practices.

A number of people who were activists and reformers joined together in 1830 to begin the Popular Health Movement. One of thee people was Frances Wright who felt that the current medical situation was a grave one and needed many improvements. A number of forms of natural healing evolved out of the Popular Health Movement including hydrotherapy, eclectic medicine (which was founded by Dr. Wooster Beech), herbalism (which came from the Thomsonianism of Samuel Thompson) and natural hygiene from the Orthopathy of Sylvester Graham and Isaac Jennings, MD.

The word "natural" as in natural healing makes reference to both the physical as well as the mental areas of existence. Natural healing is in no way connected to religion nor does it run counter to any religious beliefs. Instead it is concerned with promoting good health and wellness as well as healing. Natural healing and natural health is an approach to healing that looks at a person as a whole It is basically "an integrated approach to health that considers the person's social, and environmental surroundings, in their relationship to the condition of the mind and body as a whole."

Natural healing is all about self-healing and it is founded on the belief that a person has the ability to heal themselves from within. Natural healing works with an individual's inner vital energy or what is referred to as the "vis medicatrix naturae" (which is the wisdom that the body already has inherently). Natural healing believes that a person can only be healed if the whole is looked at as opposed to individual parts in isolation. Natural healing is a facet of alternative medicine and it involves a variety of health practices, health approaches and products that can contribute to healing of the mind and body. Natural healing is not meant to be a substitute for conventional Western medicine but instead as a complement to it.
